Lighting Glossary

The terms you'll see on every spec sheet

Lumenslm

Total visible light a bulb emits — independent of direction or focus. A 9,000-lumen bulb in a bad housing is still a bad headlight.

Candelacd

Intensity in one direction. What actually lights up the road. Beam-pattern engineering decides where the candela land.

KelvinK

Color temperature. 3000K = selective yellow (fog). 5000K = neutral white. 6500K = daylight. Above 6500K = blue, useless.

CAN-bus

The bus the car uses to detect bulb failure. LED draws less current, the car thinks the bulb is out. Onboard CAN-bus drivers fake the load — no resistors, no flicker.

ECE R112

European regulation for asymmetric low-beam cutoff. The bar we calibrate to. Defines how sharply the beam falls off above horizontal — i.e. how much glare hits oncoming traffic.

IP ratingIPxx

Ingress protection. IP67 = dust-tight, immersion to 1m. What you want for anything mounted forward of the firewall.
